Swanage Road

This project involved the transformation and extension of a traditional London terraced home to create a brighter, more contemporary family living environment while retaining the character of the original property.

The design focused on improving the relationship between the interior spaces and the garden, introducing natural light and creating a seamless open-plan living area suitable for modern family life.

At the rear of the property, a carefully designed extension opens the ground floor into a spacious kitchen, dining, and living area. Large sliding glass doors connect the interior directly to the garden, allowing the space to expand outdoors during warmer months and maximising daylight throughout the day. A rooflight positioned along the side return further enhances the natural light, drawing it deep into the plan and highlighting the textures of the exposed brick boundary wall.

The kitchen forms the heart of the new space, with a central island designed for both cooking and social interaction. Clean lines, integrated appliances, and a restrained palette of materials create a contemporary yet warm atmosphere that complements the character of the existing home.

Internally, the living areas have been reconfigured to improve flow and functionality. Built-in shelving and a refined fireplace create a focal point in the reception space, while the use of light finishes and timber flooring helps unify the interior. The overall design balances modern interventions with the home’s original architectural features, resulting in a cohesive and comfortable living environment.

The garden was also refreshed to extend the living space visually and functionally, with new planting and seating areas that frame views from the interior and provide an intimate outdoor setting for relaxation and entertaining.

The result is a calm, light-filled home where contemporary design enhances the character of the existing structure while supporting the needs of modern living.
